Compact laser safety shutter

Mechanical shutter concept with electric actuation, position sensing and a 3D-printed functional prototype.

Project status: Functional prototype and design development; no verification of a certified laser safety function.

The design task

A compact shutter was to mechanically open or close an aperture in the laser beam path. The portfolio specifies dimensions of approximately 130 × 70 × 40 mm with an aperture of about 14 mm.

Mechanism, actuation and feedback

The concept combines electromagnetic actuation with mechanical return and inductive position sensing. The intended de-energised state is closed. Available space, travel and component accessibility were central design constraints.

Prototype and iterative development

A 3D-printed functional model was used to check motion, space and assembly. Findings from the build informed further design. The videos show different development stages.

My contribution

Detailed mechanical design, component selection and integration, and construction and testing of functional models. The development demonstrates mechanical implementation; safety qualification for a specific laser application requires a separate assessment.
